A Few Words from the CEC Board
Canadian Electroacoustic Community
A sound network.
Dear CEC Members,
Spring greetings to everyone. It has been a long and strange year for us all, I suspect; now with days getting longer and news stories slowly beginning to look a bit more optimistic, it is time to look forward to some of the projects the CEC has coming up.
JTTP 2021 — Jeu de temps / Times Play
Central among these, is the 2021 edition of Jeu de temps / Times Play (JTTP), the CEC’s annual project aimed at promoting and celebrating new electroacoustic works from young and/or emerging electroacoustic artists from (or living in) Canada.
For JTTP, as with all other CEC projects, the CEC advocates the widest possible interpretation of the umbrella term “electroacoustic,” encompassing a divergent range of studio and live practices, from acousmatic and musique concrète to circuit bending and hardware hacking to sound art and videomusic, but also embracing live coding and glitch, soundscape and acoustic ecology, electronic and tape music, sound design and live audiovisual, turntablism and generative, as well as any combination or permutation thereof.
The project offers an unprecedented degree of support to young and/or emerging electroacoustic artists. All of the participants benefit from:
- Inclusion in a competition with an international jury;
- Ongoing support and presence through the CEC’s website, where all programme notes and biographies are available, and all submissions can be heard / viewed;
- Inclusion in Sonus, the CEC’s online Jukebox for electroacoustic works.
Additionally, thanks to the generous contributions of our Project Partners, the composers of the top five prizewinning works are also offered:
- Awards packages that include CDs, books and journal subscriptions, as well as cash prizes to the top three winners (total prize packages worth over $3500);
- Multiple radio broadcasts by our Canadian and international Media Partners;
- International concert presentation of the top-scoring works.
We will give an update on this year’s edition later in the summer.
eContact! Another of the CEC’s favourite projects is its online journal for electroacoustic practices, eContact! Submissions have been received for our Live Coding issue, now in production; we are excited to finally be covering this topic for the first time, and we have received some terrific submissions which we can’t wait to share with you, on subjects including live coding, laptop orchestras (lork), and other live, multidisciplinary configurations and contexts.
Board of Directors — Call for Nominations. Nominations are open for the CEC’s Board of Directors. Interested in getting involved with the CEC? Nominate yourself! The deadline is 31 May 2021, via our self-nomination form.
Membership. Finally, a reminder that it will soon be that time of year again: reminders will be going out in early June for membership dues. Thanks, as always, for your support — it’s what makes it possible for the CEC to do all the things we do!
Looking forward to a future where we can all sit in the dark again, listening to music together.
