President’s Report for the 2022–23 Fiscal Year

Video 1 (1:04:14). Video documentation of the CEC’s 2023 AGM, with a performance by Jean-François Laporte bookending the proceedings.

Bonjour tout le monde! We had a lot of activities in 2022–23, and I will present you some information on these with a few perspectives on upcoming activities. 1[1. The President’s Report starts at 26:20 in the video documentation of the AGM.]

It was my last year as president, as I am stepping down to concentrate on other professional obligations. I wish to thank the other outgoing board members Sarah Harris, Terri Hron and Corina MacDonald, and welcome new members Simon Chioni, Étienne Mason, Rick Nance and Pauline Patie.

Overview of Activities

JTTP

First, I would like to talk about JTTP, one of my favourite projects to talk about!

Thanks to a partnership with the Centro Mexicano para la Música y las Artes Sonoras (CMMAS), for JTTP 2022 the eligibility was extended to include young / emerging electroacoustic artists from or living in Latin America as well as Canada. Works that received prizes and thematic awards were performed in concert at CMMAS (Morelia, Mexico). CMMAS is an important international partner of the CEC, and we are very honoured to have had them as partner for the fourth such collaboration 2[2. In 2003, the CEC collaborated with the UK’s Sonic Arts Network (SAN), in 2009 with Germany’s Deutsche Gesellschaft für elektroakustische Musik (DEGEM) and in 2010 with the Australasian Computer Music Association (ACMA).]

Argentinian composer Alejandro Brianza, the Hildegard Westerkamp Award recipient in JTTP 2022, recently did a three-week residency at Sporobole (Sherbrooke QC), a JTTP Residency Partner since 2021. Plans to continue the partnership are in place, and we will also act on a new Partnership offer from Lobe Studios in Vancouver for selected artists from JTTP 2023; a great opportunity for our JTTP prizewinners and award recipients. Thanks to Board member Carey Dodge for helping us get that in place in Vancouver!

On that note, I am pleased to release the results from the 2023 edition of JTTP!

eContact!

The most recent issue out the door is issue 21.2 “Dematerialization of the Sounding Object: Conceptual approaches to sound-based artistic practices.” Please check it out if you haven’t already, we have published articles by Ted Apel, Raphaël Belfiore, Alberto Bernal, Simon Coovi-Sirois, Guillaume Boutard and Nicolas Bernier, Click Nilson, Harold Schellinx and Estelle Schorpp, as well as an interview with Gordon Monahan by James O’Callaghan.

We have had delays in recent years, but I am pleased to report that we have been catching up nicely on this production backlog. Two further issues are now in production and coming out this fall: Sound Art (22.1) and Alternat(iv)e Form(at)s for Electroacoustic Practices (22.2).

Looking forward, a two-year plan for eContact! will be developed in early 2024 (for 2025 and 2026).

Check calls for contributions regarding upcoming issues such as Sound Installation (with a deadline of 1 April 2024), as well as issues comprising the two-year plan.

Strategic Plan

We designed a Strategic Plan in 2020 to run through 2024, and all is advancing well. Delays in planned outreach activities due to Covid restrictions and an unsuccessful Canada Council for the Arts application, but we aim to work on that in the coming fall-winter season.

In the first half of 2024 the new Board will draft a new four-year Strategic Plan. Updates on these and other activities will be published in eFlash!, newsletter for CEC members.

Conclusion

In closing, I would like to thank Jean-François Laporte for the performance in this “Enhanced AGM”. He was the perfect choice this year because this year’s 1st Prize work by Julie Delisle were made using sounds produced by Jean-François’ instruments. And last year’s 2nd Prize winner (Canada), Diego Bermudez Chamberland, used JF’s sounds and performed live on his instruments. 3[3. For more information on the biannual competition, consult the Totem Contemporain website.]

I would now like to invite Shawn Pinchbeck to present his Treasurer’s Report for the 2022–23 fiscal year.
