Catching the Fall
ix 1999
"Catching the Fall" is the second movement of "Uncas Pocus", a work of cinema pour l'oreille which explores the interaction of mankind with the natural environment, using sounds collected from rural Connecticut. Throughout the piece, natural sounds (i.e. sounds of nature) are juxtaposed with sounds of man-made things in such a way as to make it ambiguous just which is which. Natural sounds are also subjected to unnatural (i.e. computer-based) treatments, from which they return to torment the imagination, just as the wilds themselves still do for some New Englanders.
