2017 AGM — Annual General Meeting / AGA 2017 — Assemblée générale annuelle
President’s Report / Rapport du Président
[ return to the index / Agenda ]
Hello all. I’m glad to be here with you for the 2017 Annual General Meeting of the CEC, and sorry I couldn’t be there in person this year. Like every year I would like to update you on the state of things currently and a glimpse into the near future.
eContact!
There are some changes coming eContact!’s way since the CCA funding structure has changed in the past two to three years. Since last AGM we published three issues, and there are three more in production as well as two more planned through 2017–18 year. A short summary of the last three:
18.3 — Sonic DIY: Repurposing the Creative Self
DIY audio and sound art practices celebrate the unique visions and practices of the individual artist. The socio-political ramifications of DIY practice, personal perspectives on DIY and custom design, and sharing, repurposing and community-building are explored in pieces about DIY practitioners, their instruments, intentions and artistic practice.
18.4 — TIES 2016: 10th Toronto International Electroacoustic Symposium
Prolific media artist, composer and saxophonist John Oswald was the Keynote Speaker for the tenth edition of the Toronto International Electroacoustic Symposium (TIES), where presentations questioning the nature of the performance space and the roles of those involved in articulating works within these spheres featured prominently.
19.1 — JTTP 2016: 17th Jeu de temps / Times Play
Recent works by young and/or emerging composers and sound artists from or living in Canada are featured in the 17th edition of Jeu de temps / Times Play, coordinated annually by the CEC since 2000. JTTP 2016 events include a special concert at the Centro Mexicano para la Música y Artes Sonoras (CMMAS) in Morelia, Mexico.
And stay tuned for these upcoming issues now through May 2018:
- 19.2 — Light+Sound, with Guest Editor Nicolas Bernier
- 19.3 — Notation, with a significant amount of content from our own jef chippewa
- 20.1 — JTTP 2017: 18th Jeu de temps / Times Play
- 20.2 — TIES 2017: 11th Toronto International Electroacoustic Symposium
- 20.3 — Media-Specific Music
You might notice that volumes 19 and 20 will have only three issues instead of usual four. As I mentioned, we have shifted some resources from journal production to the administration and planning for the next few years of eContact! Shawn Pinchbeck will tell us more about the financial considerations relating to the CEC’s online journal for electroacoustic practices in his upcoming Treasurer’s Report.
JTTP
The project continues to strive with a large number of submissions and a large international jury.
The full results of the 2017 edition will be released in eContact! 20.1 (October 2017), which will include audio, programme notes and composer bios for all submissions, an events page, and a list of our many esteemed supporters and contributors that have helped make another successful edition of this annual project supporting recent work of young and emerging composers and sound artists in Canada. But for now, I am very happy to announce the winners to you:
- Xavier Madore — Les loges de la suite (2017)
- Pierre-Luc Lecours — Éclats | Blanc (2015)
- Pierre-Luc Senécal — Public Gardens (2017)
- Samuel Béland — Naïca (2017), videomusic
- Xavier Ménard — Fragmentation(s) (2017)
These five composers will receive prize packages comprising donations by Project Partners from around the world worth a total of over $3000 (CDs, magazine subscriptions, books). Additionally, cash prizes will be offered the to 1st, 2nd and 3rd-place composers, through the generous contributions of a number of individuals.
Beyond catalyzing wonderful new music through the years, the 2016 edition of JTTP allowed us to continue to build relations with Centro Mexicano para la Música y las Artes Sonoras (CMMAS), who, in April 2017 hosted a JTTP concert. CEC Admin jef chippewa was there, and four of the winners were not only able to attend the concert, but did so with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et lettres du Québec. We are really thankful to Rodrigo Sigal and the CMMAS team, who have been extremely supportive of CEC projects over the years. The winners were eager to return there to do composition residencies, and in fact Myriam will do so already in spring 2018.
SONUS
It’s time to upgrade SONUS, I think it’s pretty clear. We’ve been discussing it for years now, and with the change in our focus for CCA funding from publications to special projects, this may be an opportunity to make SONUS what it can be. With recently getting Special Project funding from the SOCAN Foundation (above Annual Operations) we are going to address the most urgent items, bringing the interface up-to-date technologically and in terms of material accessibility, uploading new material and more. Yves and jef will be researching and learning all that we need to know about streaming licences, copyright matters and technology. We are on it.
CEC Board
The most recent movement in the CEC board is the departure of Emilie LeBel and the welcoming of Myriam Boucher as a Member-at-Large.
It’s been a pleasure to work with Emily. I wish to thank her for her commitment to the development of the Toronto EA scene, notably her role as chair at TIES, where she was instrumental in expanding the international scope and reputation of TIES. We miss you already ☺
I also wish to welcome Myriam Boucher — a JTTP winner two years in a row (2016, 2015) with videomusic. Her expertise in both acousmatic composition and videomusic, and her rich and growing connections with electroacoustic communities worldwide is certainly a valuable asset for the CEC.
The CEC’s Board of Directors for 2017–18 is as follows:
- President: Eldad Tsabary (Montréal) 2016–18;
- Vice-President: Carey Dodge (Vancouver) 2017–19;
- Secretary: Jean Routhier (Vancouver) 2017–19;
- Treasurer: Shawn Pinchbeck (Edmonton) 2016–18;
- Members at Large: Joseph Hyde (Bath UK) 2017–19, Myriam Boucher (Montréal) 2017–19.
TIES
I wish to thank NAISA and the CMC for their continuing support, hard work and collaboration in hosting, organizing and facilitating TIES. I’m sorry I couldn’t be there this year and I’m looking forward to hearing how things went, hearing about the new trends and new connections, and about all the fun community stuff that happens at TIES.
Closing Remarks
Thank you all for being here, physically or remotely, and I would like to now invite Shawn Pinchbeck to present his Treasurer’s Report.
Eldad Tsabary
