At the outset we were aware of certain preferences for tone, content, and execution of the piece that are favoured by Daniel Bélanger, the dancer who the piece is intended for. The first stage of work began with the text of John Marriott that is heard in the piece. This followed discussions with Daniel as to his own inspirations and directions. The poem was crafted with a concern for these preferences, and with a mind to lending itself to a dramatic music of sequences—that join in a narrative of scene with a cinematographic quality. The music and vocals work to portray a journey through many environments and moods. We examined the poem to consider pacing, suitable approaches, and sounds that are true to the poem's themes and moods. A great deal of attention was devoted then and through the piece to the choice and placement of image-conjuring sounds. DC
