“Pianocentrix” is an adventure into the sonorities of the piano- encompassing both real pianos and fantastical ones. Digitally-sampled piano sonorities are condensed, stretched, melted, shaded, and turned inside-out to create a flow of sound textures that are as characteristic of the piano as they are impossible outside the realm of electroacoustics. “Pianocentrix” was created in the summer of 1988 using the resources of the composer's digital electroacoustic music studio in Scarborough (Ontario). The work was commissioned by David Olds for CKLN FM radio in Toronto with the assistance of a Commissioning Grant from the Ontario Arts Council. “Pianocentrix” had its premiere performance in the September 26 , 1988 broadcast of CKLN's Transfigured Night.
