The first version was composed in West Berlin and first performed there by trombonist James Fulkerson, to whom the piece is dedicated. There are no specific instruments assigned to this piece and in this version trombone and piano will be reflecting into themselves through a system of amplification and multitrack pre-recorded tapes. Hypnos: (from the Greek) the god of sleep, identified by the Romans with “somnus” and from “hypnosis”, sleep-like condition psychically induced in which the subject is in a state of altered consciousness. The frequency spectrum of this piece is restricted to an augmented fourth that slowly enlarges only up to a ninth. The dynamic envelope has a similar procedure: it is restricted from 0 to 5, in a scale from 0 to 10.
