Barry Truax is a Professor Emeritus in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University (Vancouver), where he taught courses in acoustic communication and electroacoustic music. He edited the World Soundscape Project’s Handbook for Acoustic Ecology, and published Acoustic Communication, dealing with sound and technology. As a composer, Truax is best known for his work with the PODX computer music system, which he has used for tape compositions, music theatre pieces and works with live performers or computer graphics. In 1991, Riverrun was awarded the Magisterium at the International Competition of Electroacoustic Music in Bourges (France). Truax’s multi-channel soundscape compositions are frequently featured in concerts and festivals around the world. Since retiring in 2015, Barry has been Edgard Varèse Guest Professor at the Technical University of Berlin, and has been invited as Guest Composer for the BEAST Festival (Birmingham UK), as well as for similar events in Hamburg, Lisbon, Milan, Salzburg, L’Aquila, Venice and Korea. He has guest edited two issues on soundscape composition for Organised Sound and is co-editor of the Routledge Companion to Sounding Art. Truax is an Honorary Member of the Canadian Electroacoustic Community (CEC).
