Bruce Pennycook was born in Toronto in 1949 and studied at the University of Toronto under Gustav Ciamaga, Lothar Klein, and John Weinweig (MMus, 1974). After two years of free-lancing as a studio musician in Toronto, he went to Stanford University, completing a Doctor of Musical Arts (1978) under John Chowning and Leland Smith. Pennycook then taught at Queen’s University in Kingston for nine years, establishing a new center for music and technology. He has published numerous articles on computer music systems and his music is performed frequently in Canada, the United States and Europe. Pennycook is also an active saxophonist specializing in new music and has performed recently in Den Haag (Holland), Los Angeles, New York and Montréal. He is a founding member of the Canadian Electroacoustic Community (CEC).
