Studies for Plastic Fetus and Guitar is a musique concrète, tape-edited, study based on one sound sample: the sound of plastic model of a human fetus dropped on the strings of a classical guitar. The sample originated in experiments with “prepared" classical guitar. The strings were woven or struck with objects like bus passes, bank cards, plastic models. A series of drastically edited and modified versions of the sample end with a single, verbatim version of the sample. The composer was given the plastic model at a pro-life booth at an agricultural fair in southwestern Ontario. This region sits between Toronto and the American midwest and includes strong, Bible-Belt-type cultures. The title is tasteless, dumb, and typical of cocky, male youth.
