“Portraits in a Landscape” was created at the suggestion of Ontario/Newfoundland visual artist Anne Meredith Barry, and designed to complement a series of art gallery installations of her work “Travelling Vests”. The latter consists of images that document Anne's travels to 12 remote sites in disparate parts of the country, dealing with landscape, cultural memory, and actual found collaged material. In structuring a complementary work, I decided to create my own parallel sequence of vignettes—a kind of Canadian portrait in sound, scanning the landscape from east coast to west. My thanks to John Loughrey of Queen's University Electronic Music Studio (Kingston), for technical assistance in realizing this project. TD
