“Matrices”, a sound-light composition, is based upon a tone row and the synaesthesia of color, in this instance, the color spectrum. The three movements, Red, Blue, and Yellow, have within them subtle shadings indicated by a color code for each measure. Performers have the option to perform the work with lights directed either to the performers, the stage area, walls or even areas of the auditorium and the audience may be flooded with colored lights. The first piece, Red, denotes life, blood, whereas Blue calls forth religious, harmonious qualities. The final movement, Yellow, connotes intellect, and in the words of Kandinsky,‘it is the most psychologically disturbing of all colors’. MJvA
