“Upon hearing the first koto in Spring” was composed in the spring of 1987 and realized in a ‘tapeless’ MIDI studio. The primary melodic material is serial and based on two forms of octotonic scales. An alternating ‘ensemble’ and ‘soloist’ present a continuous set of variations on a theme which is never stated in its entirety and only alluded to at the beginning and the conclusion of the work. GC
