“shadeless, peopled” was created by the multilayering of entirely acoustic sound sources. Scrap metal, voices, bowed aluminum pot lids and guitar among numerous other sounds have been combined in large numbers (averaging 200 layers and up to 500 attacks per second) to produce unique sound structures. It is an extended approach to orchestration which aims primarily at developing sound structure rather than melodies, themes, and motives. The gestures tend to be extended to suspend and transform the initial dramatic import of something otherwise familiar. Crescendi, accelerandi and increases in density all take on a new sensibility in this context. All these formal concerns aside, the music is intense and physical, manifesting itself clearly. An openness to the immediacy of this physicality is crucial to initiating a conversation with the listener. AC
