Deliberate Disguises takes its title from TS Eliot's poem “The Hollow Men”. Although the piece was not intended to be programmatic, much of its sonic material as well as its formal construction were inspired by the aural and visual imagery of the poem. The work was completed over the summer of 1986 in the McGill University Electronic Music Studio.
