John Free

for computer and guitar

“The Shape Of Things to Come” is a duet for a computer and guitar. The computer plays parts which may be modified by the guitarist as the performance transpires. The scores and the timbres played by the computer were generated using fractal equations. With the use of a guitar-to-MIDI converter the computer listens to the improvised guitar and plays when certain criteria in the guitar part are met. The strings are mapped, low to high, to six different spatial locations in the room. Hence the spatial shapes generated by the guitar control the future (unfolding) of the computer part. JF
