To celebrate the 100th birthday of Hugh Le Caine, a special session on the final day of TIES 2014 will be presented: “A Noisome Pestilence”. We are now accepting proposals for papers, lecture-recitals, compositions and performances for this session on the life and work of Hugh Le Caine.
Submissions for this special session can address various aspects of Le Caine’s work:
- Explore the unique qualities of Le Caine’s instruments and their impact on early electroacoustic composition. Discuss whether and how Le Caine shaped the technique and vocabulary of electroacoustic composition beyond his activity as a composer, and beyond the application of his instruments.
- Focus on a musical lineage and track how particular composers, or colleagues / collaborators of Le Caine, utilized his instruments.
- How did Le Caine’s interest in the role of the performer define his instrument designs? How did this relate to other trends in electronic music at the time?
The special session on Hugh Le Caine will be framed within the 8th edition of Toronto International Electroacoustic Symposium (TIES, formerly TES), which will be held in Toronto at New Adventures in Sound Art’s facilities at the Artscape Wychwood Barns 13–17 August 2014. This year’s TIES Keynote Speaker is Pauline Oliveros.
Submissions for “A Noisome Pestilence” should be submitted directly to the TIES Symposium Chair Emilie LeBel, no later than 1 April 2014.
Note: Submissions that are incomplete or do not follow the submission guidelines (see checklist below) risk being omitted from the selection process.
