Cindy John

for 6 trombones and computer

[traduction française non disponible]

“Blowout” is a composition written for six trombones and computer. In this work the computer part was written first, using the trumpet algorithm in a music 4BF program on a Universe68 computer. This work presents two main ideas. The first section of the piece which is built upon a pitch frame of tritones and semitones, portrays growing tension. The computer part arrives at interruptive points to disrupt the even passages of the trombones. The trombones gradually increases in speed and use complex harmonic structures to counteract the computer. Three short episodes of growing tension occur, with the climatic point arriving in the middle of the work. The second section illustrates a reflection of the previous mood. Long sustained trombone passages are complimented with quiet gestures from the computer part. CJ
