Works » By Title » A » a kindred spirit (16:00 / 1985)

Claude Schryer

pour ensemble et bande

The computer generated sounds in “a kindred spirit” form a large body in which instrumental sounds float and appear from, like weeds oscillating on a sometimes calm and often turbulent sea of sound. ‘You're afraid, in the mirror, of the sea, in front of, you're afraid…’ and ‘Searching, for a common pulse, to sustain, to carry on, searching…’ are circular phrases which reflect elements of both doubt and courage… Mourning that which can never return. Celebrating that which will always be with us. The tape part to “a kindred spirit” was realized in the spring of 1985 at the Electronic Music Studio of McGill University on a Synclavier II digital synthesizer. The instrumental parts were completed in December, 1985, at The Banff Centre, School of Fine Arts, in Alberta, where the work received its first performance on December 7th, 1985. CS
