This work, of first in a series of four octets, was composed in 1983 for an ensemble of electric guitars. This version is for eight (computer-controlled) synthesizers, their fundamentals being tuned in just intonation, specifically on the first eight odd partials-3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17. It is only through the superimposition of these partials that it is possible to “re-constitute” the fundamentals of the long ‘phantom melody’ that underlies the piece. This version was first performed (live) at a concert of M.A.O. (Musique assistée par ordinateur), at the 1986 Printemps électroacoustique of l'ACREQ. (JFD/KA)

  • Studio: Studio privé ; mixée au Concordia University Electroacoustic Studio (Montréal, Québec)
  • Premiere: «Concert MAO», Printemps électroacoustique de l'ACREQ (Montréal, Québec)
