Definition

“Mixed” instrument and tape works involve the playback of pre-recorded music (on tape or other fixed support) simultaneously with a live performance of composed (written, or scored) or improvised music by one or more performers. (Dictionnaire des arts médiatiques, “Musique mixte” entry) Compositionally, it implies the combination of traditional instruments and electroacoustics into one “ensemble”. In some cases, the relation between the two components is not unlike that of the soloist and orchestra in the Concerto. In other cases, the goal is to create a sort of “hyper-instrument”.
