Thomas Edison invents the first phonograph. These devices used metal cylinders and could record and reproduce sound.
Speaking of the future uses of the phonograph around 1878, Edison wrote “It could be useful to the composer of musical works. By playing some of the greatest arias backwards, some very lovely melodies are produced. I would imagine that a musician could, through such experiences, discover one popular melody per day.
