The sampler is an electronic instrument capable of recording sound fragments (samples) from diverse sources and playing them back at any moment using a keyboard, which can vary the pitch of the sample, if desired. It first appeared at the end of the 1960s and had its “hour of glory” in the 1980s and 90s. Wikipedia correctly states that “[s]ince 2000, computer-based virtual samplers have gradually succeeded the initial physical instruments in popularity.” [Translation] (Wikipédia, “Échantillonneur” entry)
Synthesized orchestral instruments are attempts to reproduce acoustic sounds using various synthesis, re-synthesis and physical modelling techniques.
These two methods, employed together or independently, are used to create orchestrations that emulate — sometimes in an incredibly convincing manner — traditional instrumental formations.
