SUSTAINED TEXTURES / EVOLVING DRONES |
Definition |

|
The word “drone” refers to a sustained buzzing or humming tone or sound with little or no change. Over time it would be used in music in reference to a monochord sound, such as the “pedal tone” in Classical music, a sustained note or chord over which the harmonic progression continues, sometimes causing clashes (e.g. dominant pedal). Currently in electronica the drone tends to be a loud, dense and sustained sound. In electroacoustics, the drone is usually not static, but rather evolves, accompanied or interrupted by elements which make its sonic density or its timbre more complex. |
