PADS OR LAYERED KEYBOARDS / SYNTHPAD |

The term “pad” is difficult to define here as it has a number of meanings. The meaning most commonly encountered in music is that of protection, like a cap or limiter. The term “synthpad” can therefore be understood as a form of support, a binding and smearing element. Synthpads are found virtually everywhere in pop music, especially in ballads, using either strings, choirs or brass sounds as virtual sources. Used in this manner, pads give continuous harmonic support to the entire sound orchestra, playing a similar role as the harpsichord playing basso continuo in the Baroque orchestra. The meaning in electroacoustics today is more along the lines of complex synthetic sounds that are slowly modulated, varied. |
