Interview with Shawn Pinchbeck, Composer / Sound Artist

Development of a collaborative and experimental artistic community in Edmonton

Interview from 20 November 2011 in the Ortona Armory, where a number of installations were set up during the Sea of Sound Festival, a collaboration between the Music Department of the University of Alberta, Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society (BEAMS) and Tonus Vivus, held in conjunction with and complementing the CEC’s 25th Anniversary events.

Shawn Pinchbeck is an electroacoustic music composer, sound artist, video artist, performer, installation artist, teacher, curator, sound engineer and consultant based in Edmonton, Alberta. His current works centre around computer vision, live electroacoustic music performance, music for dance, interactive sound and video installations, software art, multi-channel sound, and circuit bending. Shawn currently sits on the boards of the Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society (BEAMS), the Canadian Electroacoustic Community (CEC) and the Film and Video Arts Society-Alberta (FAVA). He is a lecturer of sound design at the Baltic Film and Media School in Tallinn, Estonia and a lecturer of interactive art at the Art Research Lab at Liepaja University, Liepaja, Latvia. Shawn holds a PhD from the University of Birmingham (UK). He has seven CD releases, and his music has appeared on numerous other compilations and film soundtracks. Shawn’s music and installations have been performed and presented at numerous festivals in Canada and abroad.
